History
Brief History of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Udayana University was established through several stages. It began with the Rector of Udayana University Decree No. 613/PT.17/I.a.012/1984 dated July 1, 1984, concerning the establishment of the Study Program of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (PS MIPA) at Udayana University. At that time, two sub-study programs were formed, namely the Sub-Study Program of Chemistry and the Sub-Study Program of Physics. The Sub-Study Program of Biology was subsequently established on May 1, 1985, through Rector Decree No. 325/PT.17/I.01.12/1985, as a new sub-study program under PS MIPA of Udayana University.
One of the main considerations behind the issuance of these decrees was the intention to establish a dedicated academic entity focused on the development of basic sciences. In practice, development processes in various sectors through applied sciences require strong support from the advancement and mastery of basic sciences.
Over time, following proposals submitted to the central government in Jakarta, the Rector’s decision was further endorsed by the Directorate General of Higher Education through Decrees No. 63/DIKTI/Kep/1988, No. 66/DIKTI/Kep/1988, and No. 67/DIKTI/Kep/1988. These decrees stipulated that the Sub-Study Programs of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology would be administered under the Faculty of Animal Husbandry of Udayana University. The decrees also stated that these sub-study programs were undergraduate (Bachelor’s degree) programs and inter-faculty programs implemented in collaboration with the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Universitas Airlangga.
Based on the Directorate General of Higher Education Decrees No. 81/DIKTI/Kep/1989, No. 91/DIKTI/Kep/1989, and No. 92/DIKTI/Kep/1989, the Sub-Study Program of Chemistry was upgraded to the Chemistry Study Program, the Sub-Study Program of Biology to the Biology Study Program, and the Sub-Study Program of Physics to the Physics Study Program. These programs were inter-faculty undergraduate (Bachelor’s degree) programs administered directly under the Rector.
Through the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 0382/0/1993 dated October 22, 1993, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Udayana University was officially established, consisting of three study programs: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. This was followed by the Directorate General of Higher Education Decree No. 07/DIKTI/Kep/1994 dated January 15, 1994, which formally designated the faculty to consist of three departments: the Department of Physics, the Department of Chemistry, and the Department of Biology.
