Bukit Jimbaran, Wednesday, August 13, 2025 – The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Udayana University received a visit from Prof. Dr. Gautam Kumar Jha, Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), India, and Prof. Dr. Eng. I Made Joni, M.Sc. from Padjadjaran University (Unpad) Bandung to discuss follow-up to the planned Indonesia-India Bioresources Consortium (IIBC) collaboration. The visit was welcomed by the Dean of FMIPA, Prof. Dra. Ni Luh Watiniasih, M.Sc., Ph.D., along with faculty leaders and lecturer representatives. The meeting, held at the FMIPA Dean's Office Building, discussed the direction of strategic collaboration to utilize biological resources, particularly in the development and standardization of herbal medicines.

During the discussion, the parties discussed how herbal medicines can be legalized and standardized to achieve the same clarity as generic drugs. This includes determining the type of plant used, identifying active ingredients, proving efficacy, and testing for safety and effectiveness. This ensures that the resulting herbal medicine meets scientific standards and is officially recognized for use in medicine.

Prof. Dr. Gautam Kumar Jha shared India's experience in utilizing modern technology and phytopharmaceutical research to leverage the potential of medicinal plants into standardized health products. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Eng. I Made Joni explained the importance of cross-border synergy in accelerating the research process downstream, so that the results can be directly felt by the public.

The Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Udayana University emphasized that the collaboration within the IIBC framework is a strategic step to develop research based on Indonesia's natural resources, particularly Bali, which is rich in medicinal plants. "With the support of collaborative research and appropriate standardization, we can produce herbal products that are safe, efficacious, and globally competitive," he said.

This meeting also provided momentum to design concrete steps, from the development of joint research protocols, researcher and student exchanges, to plans for developing herbal research laboratories that meet international standards. Through this follow-up, it is hoped that the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Udayana University can play an active role in the IIBC network and contribute to advancing the herbal medicine industry based on proven and trusted scientific research.
