FMIPA UNUD, CIFOR, NIFoS, dan BRIN Hold Beyond Green Carbon: The 1st International Symposium

`

The Unud Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences collaborated with the Center for International Forestry (CIFOR), the Korean National Institute of Forest Science (NIFoS), and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to hold the Beyond Green Carbon: The 1st International Symposium. The activity which was held at Prama Sanur Beach Hotel on March 27 2023 took the theme Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation with Blue Carbon: Cross-sectional Research from Two Islands.

This activity began with Opening remarks Introduction to the symposium, Cross-sectional Research from Two Islands by Himlal Baral, CIFOR-ICRAF senior scientist. Then it was followed by Welcome remarks by the Dean of FMIPA Unud Dra. Ni Luh Watiniasih, M.Sc, Ph.D and a congratulatory address by the Head of NIFos Jeju Sang-hyun Lee and representatives from the Bali Province Forestry and Environment Service. Himlal Baral conveyed the importance of identifying mangrove species that promise many benefits for life so that they can be preserved for the future. Ni Luh Watiniasih expressed her joy at the presence of various parties to discuss one thing that is very crucial at this time, namely climate change. One thing that is very promising to overcome this is by preserving and restoring coastal and marine ecosystems which have an extraordinary ability to capture and store carbon (blue carbon). Furthermore, it is hoped that the symposium can be used optimally as a forum for discussion that results in various collaborations to mitigate climate change issues. The same thing was conveyed by Sang-hyun Lee who hoped that this forum would become a platform for research collaboration in the future. Preserving and restoring mangrove ecosystems is a valuable opportunity to contribute to the world's carbon stocks.

At the symposium various materials related to mangrove research were presented. Bora Lee and Mihyun Seol from NIFoS presented material on mangroves research and the prospects for future research collaborations, then Prof. Budi Leksono from BRIN presented an overview of mangrove research in Indonesia, which was then continued by Ketut Subandi and Made Maha from Tahura Ngurah Rai who presented about mangroves on the island of Bali. From Udayana University, a presentation on various research in the field of mangroves that had been carried out by FMIPA and FKP was represented by I Made Saka Wijaya. The symposium also included material on Understanding Field Surveys delivered by mangrove researchers from CIFOR-ICRAF and NIFoS.
