Udayana University's Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Implements Green Chemistry to Reduce Lake Batur Pollution Through Organic Waste Utilization
Bangli, Saturday, October 25, 2025 — The Chemistry Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Udayana University, conducted a community service activity entitled "Implementation of Green Chemistry through the Conversion of Organic Waste into Ecoenzymes and the Use of Pesticides and Biofertilizers to Reduce Water Pollution in Lake Batur." This activity took place in Songan B Village, Kintamani District, Bangli Regency, Bali, and involved 28 local farmer group leaders.
This activity was motivated by the increasing water pollution in Lake Batur, indicated by high levels of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), which have exceeded the lake's water quality standards as stipulated in Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021. This pollution is largely caused by the excessive use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, tilapia fish farming activities, and residential development without adequate sanitation infrastructure.
As a solution, a team from the Chemistry Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Udayana University, provided training on the production of ecoenzymes, biopesticides, liquid organic fertilizers, and wax and fly repellent sprays made from local plants such as lemongrass, cloves, chili peppers, and papaya leaves. This training aimed to utilize agricultural waste into environmentally friendly products that could help improve water quality and reduce the community's dependence on synthetic chemicals.
The activity began with a survey and discussion with the Village Head of Songan B, Mr. I Ketut Sabtu, who provided information on the current community conditions and the use of ecoenzymes in the area. The workshop participants demonstrated high enthusiasm and expressed their hope that similar activities could continue to provide ongoing support for farmers.
Through this activity, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Udayana University, demonstrated its commitment to implementing the Green Chemistry concept and supporting sustainable development based on scientific innovation and local community empowerment.
