Udayana University's Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Educates Elementary School Students on AI-Based Disaster Mitigation (NotebookLM) & Fluid Visualization
On Saturday, July 25, 2026, a Community Service activity entitled "Improving Disaster Literacy in In-Depth Learning through NotebookLM-Based Computational Fluid Dynamics Visualization" was held. The activity, chaired by Dr. Putu Veri Swastika, M.Si. (Lecturer in the Undergraduate Mathematics Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Udayana University), was attended by lecturers and students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Udayana University, as well as students and teachers at SD Negeri 1 Kedisan, Gianyar, Bali.
Through an interactive computational science approach, students were encouraged to recognize potential natural disasters and understand water movement patterns through child-friendly Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) visualizations. This disaster education material was delivered using NotebookLM's artificial intelligence-based digital storybooks. Interestingly, the storybooks were designed specifically for each educational activity, covering three main series: Tsunami mitigation, Earthquakes, and Floods. The education also included a demonstration of a simple flood detection device.
To measure the effectiveness of student understanding, all participants participated in a pre-test before the education and a post-test after the activity. This ensured that the students' disaster and digital literacy improvements could be objectively evaluated.
In addition to focusing on technology and disaster education, the community service team also focused on reforestation. On this occasion, the team donated tree seedlings to be planted in the school yard to support environmental sustainability.
This community service activity was a follow-up to the coordination process conducted in March 2026 with the school. The principal of SD Negeri 1 Kedisan, I Wayan Rediarta, S.Pd., welcomed this program and fully supported its implementation as part of strengthening science, environmental, and technology literacy at the school.
Through this activity, it is hoped that students will not only gain new knowledge about computational science but also grow into a generation that is resilient to disasters, cares about the environment, and is prepared to face advances in artificial intelligence technology.
