Dean's Welcome Message

DEAN’S WELCOME MESSAGE – FMIPA UDAYANA UNIVERSITY

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Udayana University was established based on the idea that a dedicated platform was needed for the development of fundamental sciences at Udayana University, particularly to serve stakeholders in Central and Eastern Indonesia. The establishment of FMIPA began with the Rector’s Decree of Udayana University No. 613/PT.17/I.a.012/1984 dated 1 July 1984 on the establishment of the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Study Program (PS MIPA) of Udayana University, with two sub-study programs: Chemistry and Physics.

One year later, on 1 May 1985, the Biology sub-study program was established through the Rector’s Decree of Udayana University No. 325/PT.17/I.01.12/1985. Subsequently, the Decrees of the Directorate General of Higher Education No. 63/DIKTI/Kep/1988; No. 66/DIKTI/Kep/1988; and No. 67/DIKTI/Kep/1988 determined that the Chemistry, Physics, and Biology sub-study programs were managed under the Faculty of Animal Husbandry of Udayana University, with the provision that these three sub-study programs were Undergraduate (S1) programs and inter-faculty programs implemented in cooperation with FMIPA Universitas Airlangga.

The sub-study programs were later renamed as the Chemistry, Physics, and Biology Study Programs based on the Decrees of the Directorate General of Higher Education, respectively No. 81/DIKTI/Kep/1989; No. 91/DIKTI/Kep/1989; and No. 92/DIKTI/Kep/1989, as inter-faculty Undergraduate (S1) programs under the Rector.

With the long journey and efforts of the founders, supported by the Rector of Udayana University, on 22 October 1993, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Udayana University was officially established through the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 0382/0/1993, managing three study programs: Chemistry, Physics, and Biology. These three study programs were later transformed into the Departments of Chemistry, Physics, and Biology through the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education No. 07/DIKTI/Kep/1994 dated 15 January 1994. Based on the letter of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education No. 2843/D/T/2001 dated 31 August 2001, FMIPA Udayana University was permitted to re-establish the Undergraduate (S1) Mathematics Study Program. Thus, by 2001, FMIPA Udayana University managed four study programs.
In line with the development of science and technology, it was considered necessary to establish study programs that extend fundamental sciences into applied sciences. Therefore, upon the proposal from FMIPA and with support from the Rector of Udayana University, on 6 September 2004 the Rector proposed the establishment of the Undergraduate (S1) Pharmacy Study Program through Rector’s proposal letter No. 3459/J14/PR.01.04/2004 to the Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia. The establishment of the Pharmacy Study Program followed the letter of the Directorate General of Higher Education No. 0682/D2.2/2005 dated 21 April 2005 regarding consideration for opening the Undergraduate (S1) Pharmacy Study Program at FMIPA Udayana University. Furthermore, based on the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education No. 1193/D/T/2006 dated 12 April 2006 concerning the establishment of a new study program, the Computer Science / Informatics Engineering Study Program was established. Thus, to date, FMIPA Udayana University manages six Undergraduate (S1) study programs combining fundamental and applied sciences.
In response to the growing public demand for formal education—especially in Bali and the eastern region of Indonesia—advanced programs were proposed and approved, including the Master’s (S2) Applied Chemistry Program through the Decree of the Minister of National Education No. 2857/D/T/2008 dated 28 August 2008; the Pharmacist Professional Program through Decree No. 47/D/T/2010 dated 18 January 2010; the Master’s (S2) Biology Program through the Decree of the Minister of National Education No. 26/D/O/2010 dated 25 March 2010; and the Doctoral (S3) Biology Program through the establishment decree of the Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education No. 1060/KPT/I/2018. Following changes in program nomenclature based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 574/M/2020 dated 11 June 2020 regarding changes in study program names at Udayana University in Badung Regency, the Master’s Applied Chemistry Program became the Chemistry Master’s Program, the Master’s Biology Program name was adjusted accordingly, and the Informatics Engineering Study Program was renamed as the Informatics Study Program. Therefore, FMIPA Udayana University, as the Study Program Management Unit (UPPS), manages ten study programs led by respective Program Coordinators as follows:
  1. Chemistry Study Program
  2. Physics Study Program
  3. Biology Study Program
  4. Mathematics Study Program
  5. Pharmacy Study Program
  6. Informatics Study Program
  7. Pharmacist Professional Program
  8. Master’s Program in Chemistry
  9. Master’s Program in Biology
  10. Doctoral Program in Biology

Based on FMIPA’s historical journey and the development of the Faculty Strategic Plan (Renstra), the FMIPA Faculty Senate approved the revised Strategic Plan on 16 June 2020, which includes updates to the Vision, Mission, and Goals of FMIPA Udayana University.
