Supporting Technological Sovereignty, FMIPA UNUD Participates in the Launch of the Sahabat-AI 70B Large Language Model

Jakarta, Monday, June 02, 2025 — Representatives from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Udayana University also attended the Launching of Sahabat-AI Model 70B and Chatbot, which was held at the National Museum of Indonesia, Jakarta. This prestigious event was the launch of the second phase of Sahabat-AI, the first large language model (LLM) built with the context of local Indonesian culture and languages, including Indonesian, Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese, and Batak.


This initiative was initiated by two technology companies created by the nation's children, GoTo Group and Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, as a real form of cross-sector collaboration - from government, industry, universities, to research institutions - in supporting the sovereignty of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the country.


FMIPA Udayana University, which has collaborated since the beginning in the development process of Sahabat-AI, was represented by the UPIKS Coordinator of FMIPA Udayana University and three Informatics Study Program students who actively played a role in this project also witnessed the launch event. One of the students, Ni Komang Ayu Juliana, had the opportunity to provide a review and direct testimony regarding her experience in using Sahabat-AI.


The launch event was also attended by important figures, including the Chairman of the National Economic Council: Mr. Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Minister of Communication and Digital: Mrs. Meutya Hafid, Special Staff to the President for the Creative Economy: Yovie Widianto, and speakers in the panel discussion, namely Patrick Walujo (CEO of GoTo Group), Vikram Sinha (CEO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison), and Angga Raka Prabowo (Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital - TBC), with the session moderated by Mrs. Ayu Purwarianti, Principal Researcher of the ITB AI Center.


The launch of Sahabat-AI Model 70B, which is equipped with advanced chatbot features, is an important milestone in Indonesia's AI journey. The existence of this local LLM is expected to accelerate the national digital transformation, while strengthening the role of universities as the main pillar in producing superior AI talent for the future of the nation.
