PT Etana Biotechnologies Indonesia Delivers a Guest Lecture "Opening the Window to the Biopharmaceutical Industry" at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Udayana University.
Denpasar, Friday, December 5, 2025 - The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Udayana University, through the Pharmacy Professional Study Program and the Master of Pharmacy Study Program, held a collaborative visit and guest lecture with PT Etana Biotechnologies Indonesia on the topic "Opening the Window to the Biopharmaceutical Industry." The guest lecture featured apt. Christian Karol Saputra, S.Farm., M.Biotek, who currently serves as Etana Innovation Center Manager.
The visit was welcomed by the Coordinator of the Pharmacy Professional Study Program, the Coordinator of the Master of Pharmacy Study Program, and the Coordinator of the UPIKS FMIPA Udayana University. The discussion continued with an exploratory discussion on collaboration in research, education, industrial internships, and opportunities for downstream research in the biopharmaceutical sector. During the guest lecture, the speakers provided a comprehensive introduction to biotechnology and biopharmaceuticals, their role in solving health problems, and how medical innovation is rapidly evolving globally.
Students were introduced to the basic concepts of biopharmaceuticals as biological systems-based products, their differences from small molecule drugs, and examples of their application in diagnosis, therapy, and disease prevention. The material also covered various breakthroughs in synthetic biology, real-life examples of disease cures through CRISPR gene editing, the development of hemophilia therapy, and mRNA technology, a key component of modern vaccine innovation. Speakers also explained the biopharmaceutical manufacturing process, from upstream to downstream, including formulation, and the use of technologies such as the Single Use System, QC method, ELISA, spectrophotometry, and GMP standards for biological products.
PT Etana Biotechnologies Indonesia, a biotechnology company established in 2014, presented its milestones and achievements in the development of vaccines and biological drugs in Indonesia, including its success as the first mRNA vaccine producer in Southeast Asia, as well as various vaccine and anti-infective drug products that have been and are currently being developed. The event was attended by students from the Pharmacy Professional Program and the Master of Pharmacy Program, who demonstrated high enthusiasm through discussions and Q&A sessions regarding research potential, biological product quality, and career opportunities in the biopharmaceutical industry, both in technical (R&D, QA/QC, production) and non-technical (regulatory, BD, marketing) areas.
This event is expected to open broader collaboration between the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Udayana University and PT Etana Biotechnologies Indonesia, strengthening students' academic competencies and facilitating the development of pharmaceutical biotechnology research and innovation in the future.
