"Exploring International Collaboration to Address Biofilm Infection Challenges: Visiting Activities from PKR Biofilm UGM"

`

Bukit Jimbaran, Monday 29 April 2024 Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Udayana University received an important visit from the UGM Biofilm Research Collaboration Center (PKR). In this event the Dean of FMIPA Unud, Prof. Dra. Ni Luh Watiniasih, M.Sc., Ph.D., opened the event which was then continued with several presentations from several visiting representatives.

The first presentation from Prof. Christine Imbert from the Laboratory of Ecology and Biology of Interactions (EBI) at the University of Poitiers, France, who discussed Fungi and Biofilm. He introduced the various research being carried out to develop new products from herbal ingredients and conventional medicines to treat microbes associated with biofilms.

Then continued by Prof. Dr. Titik Nuryastuti, M.Si., Ph.D., Sp.MK(K), as Chair of PKR Biofilm UGM, delivered an update regarding clinical and laboratory diagnosis of biofilm infections. Amidst the global debate on antimicrobial resistance, a better understanding of biofilms is crucial. Research conducted by PKR Biofilm UGM shows that microbial infections associated with biofilms are a major challenge in treatment, due to increasing antimicrobial resistance.

Exploration between FMIPA Unud, PKR Biofilm UGM, and the EBI Laboratory of the University of Poitiers, France, is important in efforts to overcome the challenges above. Through this visit, it is hoped that sustainable research collaboration will be created to understand, prevent and treat biofilm infections, as well as reduce the increasing number of antimicrobial resistance.
